Upon signing with Rottweiler Records at the beginning of 2025, Canadian multi-instrumentalist and dynamic vocalist Christopher Adam had a very definite plan for his Refiner solo project. Two EPs would be followed by a full-length debut album which would bring all of his Refiner output together in one complete package. February saw the release of first EP Return To Dust, May the second EP Mistake and now September will deliver the self-titled Refiner debut album, featuring both EPs and a whole lot more.
Refiner begins with a new introductory piece, the atmospheric ‘All Aboard’ which sets the immersive tone for all that is to follow. Despite the foundations of the band Refiner being constructed from ultra heavy metalcore – bludgeoning riffs, deep grooves and caustic vocals – Adam takes his songs into new and exciting territories. Electronics and ambience, hooks and melodies, absorbing atmospheres and addictive, creative palettes of sound all make Refiner stand out from the uninspiring pack. The two songs from Return To Dust and the two songs from Mistake sound all the better for being part of this expansive package, taking on new life and vibrancy and they are joined by a dazzling new track, ‘Selfish Days’, which is the epitome of everything that’s great about this project. Surely one of the strongest songs that Christopher Adam has penned to date. While the digital version of Refiner ends there, the CD goes on to add instrumental versions of every song, a radio edit of ‘Return To Dust’ and a remix of ‘Mistake’ called ‘God Doesn’t Make Mistakes’. Altogether this is one powerful conclusion to the first year and first chapter of Christopher Adam’s Refiner.
Rottweiler Records will unleash Refiner on September 26th on digital and expanded CD formats – and if you’re a fan of forceful metalcore with diversity, depth and dynamics, then this is one album that you cannot afford to miss.
