When the death metal scene in New York and New Jersey was beginning to spawn an array of marvellous monsters, as the ‘80s clawed their way into the ‘90s, a band called Mortuary renamed themselves Deteriorot and began carving out a place for themselves in the annals of extremity. Deteriorot became a part of death metal’s rotten heart and under the constant guidance of vocalist/guitarist Paul Zavaleta they have remained true to its dictates of decay throughout the decades. Each Deteriorot release has been a monument to uncompromising dedication, to skull shattering heaviness and mind rending horror – and more than thirty five years since their story began they are about to unleash their most powerful and atmospheric album to date…Awakening!
Following the introductory death hymn of the album’s title track, Awakening roars into undead existence with the ominous evil of ‘The Flame’ where teetering monoliths of ancient riffs topple into violent explosions of menace. The idiosyncratic sound of Deteriorot surrounds you, dragging you into a dark world of nameless terrors. ‘Deliver Us From Fiction’ is inhuman, ruthless, relentless and implacable. It judges us, finds us wanting and feeds us into the furnace. ‘Programmed By Fear’ is a march into oblivion built upon riffs excavated from mass graves and ‘Winter Moon’ is the definition of absolute old school death metal devastation. The atmosphere that winds through these tracks like smoke in the aftermath of an artillery barrage is suffocating. The wild guitar solos that tear through the darkness with feral claws are electrifying. Deteriorot have delivered another staggering testament to the enduring power of death metal.
