Quarante ans, et Hell Awaits sonne encore comme une déclaration de guerre. Kerry King l'a dit lui-même : c'est l'album où Slayer est devenu Slayer. Pas une simple montée en puissance après Show No Mercy , mais une mue. Les structures s'allongent, les compositions se compliquent, et une influence inattendue pointe sous les riffs, celle de Mercyful Fate. Kerry King et Jeff Hanneman, tirent les morceaux vers des territoires plus progressifs, plus obscurs. Trois des sept titres franchissent la barre des six minutes. Pour Slayer en 1985, c'est une vrai inovation.
Le résultat : une cohérence formidable entre vitesse et architecture. Hell Awaits ouvre sur une intro devenue mythique avant de basculer dans un tourbillon de riffs en spirale. Kill Again martèle avec une rage quasi-punk. At Dawn They Sleep déploie six minutes d'une apocalypse maîtrisée, entre montées doom et breaks qui cassent net. Necrophiliac et Crypts of Eternity poussent la logique encore plus loin : des voyages en territoire maudit, avec des soli qui tranchent net et des transitions élaborées avec complexité. Dave Lombardo, derrière ses fûts, impose une technique qui fait référence : précis, brutal, inimitable et irremplaçable. La basse de Tom Araya gronde. Le chant, lui, cherche l'impact avant la mélodie : ce cri rauque, entre growl et hurlement primal, colle parfaitement à des textes qui fouillent dans les recoins les plus noirs de la violence et du sacrilège.
Patrick W. Engel a restauré les bandes originales de 1985 au Temple of Disharmony. La remastérisation redonne à chaque instrument une certaine netteté, mais sans lisser la rugosité d'époque.
Le vrai cadeau de l'édition anniversaire, c'est le live de Bochum, capturé le 18 juin 1985 : dix-huit titres inédits, avec Dave Lombardo qui est impressionnant et un set qui puise autant dans Show No Mercy que dans Hell Awaits. Le son d'époque est là, crachouillis d'amplis compris. Vous entendez quand ça accroche, quand ça grince, quand ça larsen (dès l’intro du titre Hell Awaits). Vous sentez l'urgence, la rage du groupe en pleine ascension.
Dans la discographie de Slayer, Hell Awaits reste l'album charnière, celui qui annonce sans le savoir encore, la machine de guerre qu’est Reign in Blood. Cette édition restitue la puissance créatrice du groupe avec un son écoutable de nos jours. Une énergie débordante qui s’est toujours retrouvée en live pour ce groupe incroyable qu’est Slayer.
